Java Developer

Position Description

Western & Southern has an immediate opening for an experienced Java Developer supporting the Enterprise Transformation Program.  In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to fundamentally change a Fortune 500 Company’s critical business processes.  We are seeking a developer with experience in the following technical areas: Java Enterprise Edition (J2EE), JSPs, Advanced Java, Hibernate, HTML, XML, DHTML, web services (REST, SOAP), WebSphere and Eclipse.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Researches, designs, defines, develops, tests, documents and implements new computer applications or changes to existing applications following Western & Southern Financial Group (WSFG) standards.    

  • Utilizes programming tools effectively to ensure accuracy and enhance productivity.

  • Consults and/or advises business unit associates by written and/or oral communication on inquiries concerning existing or proposed systems.

  • Prepares deployment packages for migration of solutions to the non-production environments

  • Provides training and mentoring to other programming staff, systems managers, business unit management or business unit associates on technical topics or systems definition.

  • Handles multiple assignments with multiple deadlines simultaneously.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

 

Technical Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of experience with Java development

  • 1-3 years of experience with web services and web service protocols (SOAP, REST)

  • Familiarity with ORM tools such as Hibernate

  • Experience with Unit testing frameworks such as JUnit.

  • Experience with Spring Framework is a plus.

  • 1-3 years of experience with IBM Case Manager 5.2 / 5.3 is preferred

  • Experience with IBM Content Navigator or developing web applications for IBM Websphere application server 8.x is a plus

 

Selection Criteria:

  • Proven significant programming experience (e.g., research, design, gathering requirements, working with business units, developing programs, testing, documentation, production support).  Cite examples demonstrating this experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working in matrixed project teams employing software engineering principles such as design patterns, versioning software, continuous integration, automated deployments and automated test tools.

  • Demonstrated experience with database design fundamentals and have a working knowledge of a relational DBMS preferably Oracle or MS SQL Server and be proficient in SQL.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to convey information to internal and external customers in a clear, focused and concise manner.

  • Provide examples of working under multiple deadlines and minimal supervision.  Cite examples of successfully organizing and effectively completing projects where given little or no direction.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate selection criteria experience

  • Computer skills and knowledge of hardware & software required

  • Proficient in specific programming languages listed above

  • Certifications & licenses (i.e.  Series 6 & 63, CPA, etc.):  None required

 

Position Demands:

  • Extended hours required during peak workloads or special projects.

  • Handle problems, installations, calls, etc., off-hours as required either remotely or by returning to work.

  • Occasional on-call responsibilities.
